Thankful this Thanksgiving

This morning I walked into the kitchen and saw my Turkey platter in the dish rack and the sun shining behind it. How beautiful. I reflected upon the lovely Thanksgiving dinner we had here yesterday. It is my favorite meal and occasion to prepare for.

My Big Turkey Platter

Every holiday that we have turkey, I bring out this platter. I love using our special dishes and such to make the occasion even more festive and enJOYable. My sister-in-law loved this platter so much, I also found one for her πŸ™‚ I love thrift shopping as many of you know. So much JOY!

We make so many happy memories at these get togethers and it is just so good to spend time together and to appreciate each other and to honor who we are and where we came from… that is family. Not everyone makes every holiday but that is okay, we celebrate and enJOY with whoever is able to attend. And sometimes most of us are there. I am so grateful to still have all my siblings here on earth.

As with most families we get some traditions happening. Big Audrey (because there is a little Audrey) or Baba as we call her, always carves the turkey. She is in her 80’s and still gets up there and does this. We all love it. Baba always brings me a useful gift even though I tell her she need not bring anything. One year it was an amazing turkey cutting board with spikes to hold the turkey and a little run way for the juices. Awesome. We now use it on every turkey occasion. Bubba and I both like to thrift shop hee hee. We have many happy discussions around this and often bump into each other our favorite stores. It makes me smile every time. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

The cutting board from Baba.. think how many memories have been made through its use. Beautiful!

This year Baba brought an apron to wear and to leave for me when finished. Perfect! One can never have enough aprons, especially with many hands helping in the kitchen. πŸ™‚

The apron Audrey brought me. One of many throughout the years.

With the cooler temperature at this time of year, it makes it even cozier and warming. We even had snow on the ground yesterday. πŸ™‚

Our meal was wonderful of course. We had many laughs, smiles and JOYS. We listened to Uncle John tell his many jokes and I could tell that each one of us appreciated them more than ever. We all know that life is a cycle and what we have now, we will not always, so everything is more enhanced and appreciated.

I am grateful that my family, like myself, gets more and more appreciative of moments like this. In fact, these moments are sacred to me (tears streaming down my face as I type this). I watch and observe that as we get older it means more and I watch and know that my daughter and the youth will one day cherish these times more than any other. These will be the memories that stand out for them.

At the end of the evening, Don, Bubba and myself chatted about how these ARE the most important things in life. There is nothing better than being together at times like this, sharing food, laughter, and memories, with people who are comfortable to share of themselves… to tease, to laugh and to most of all LOVE.

One of the reasons I blog is so that I can share my feelings but also to record these moments for future enJOYment for my offspring and for whoever happens upon them. I hope they will be inspired and will use my sharing and writing to inspire them to have more JOY in their life and to spread more JOY in the world. It always starts around your own kitchen table first. πŸ™‚

Sivanna’s Dad wrote her the following poem this year for Valentine’s Day.

Happy Valentine’s Sivanna

You light up my life. You shine like a star wherever you go.

I love spending time with you.

I love our special time together when you make your

special desserts before bedtime.

You will always be my special Valentine and I

will be yours until you find your own special Valentine.

Family, Friendship, love, wisdom

A View of The World from Two 12 Year Olds

Today I am sitting here with my 12 year old daughter Sivanna and her friend Robyn. While I was thinking of what I would blog about today, I thought hey why don’t I ask these two wise ones some questions about life.

Question #1
What excites you about the thought of your future?
Sivanna: Finding somebody like a husband or partner and making a family together that’s full of love and stuff.
Robyn: Making her own family with her husband.

Question #2
What makes you feel good?
Robyn: Being with my friends and family.
Sivanna: When I take my probiotics because when I’m not feeling well it makes me feel better.

Question #3
What makes a good friend?
Robyn: When they are like there for you and they are not mean and you have fun with them!
Sivanna: They respect you and your opinions and feelings.

Well I think these were some wise and interesting comments. It sounds to me that health and happiness in life come from loving and enjoying the people in our lives and also by respecting the thoughts and feelings of other people. Thanks girls for your insight and for sharing today.

Gratitude, Joy

True Joy!

joy cardThis year, my spouse Don and I, and our daughter Sivanna, got together with Don’s kids, grandkids and their spouses, great grandkids, and Joyce, the beautiful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother of all of these beautiful people, for an early Christmas celebration.

I feel very grateful to be a part of this extended family and thought I would take a minute to write about my JOY. This card from Don’s two sons and their families sums it up quite well. “Christmas is about believing in miracles and being a blessing, reviving our spirits and celebrating our JOY… Christmas is about remembering all the wonderful things in life, like the people who mean so much to us, people like you.”

I thought this was a beautiful card with a beautiful message and it will be treasured. I must mention that they also got us a great present that made me jump for JOY!

A kajak for our new place on the lake. I was so excited about this. πŸ™‚ I can see so much JOY to be had by all as we use this and enjoy the beauty of nature and our beautiful surroundings.

I encourageΒ  all of us to read the words from this greeting card and to believe in Miracles, to be a Blessing and revive our spirits now and always. How do we do this? We do this by celebrating our JOY and by counting our blessings and that includes the people in our lives that Love us and that we Love back. Thank you to our beautiful family for the blessing of being together and celebrating our JOY together this holiday season.

First Time Seeing Snow!

l1

It seems as though winter is upon us early this year and lots of people are grumbling about that, but not my great niece Lindsay. This is the first time Lindsay has seen the snow and look at the JOY!

Lindsay’s Mom, Nathalia, married my nephew John Paul and they moved to the United States from Costa Rica so there are so many new and wonder-filled experiences happening like this one.

It brings tears to my eyes to see the Joy in these pictures and the Joy in this new family. I am so proud of my nephew and of his new wife. I had the pleasure of meeting Nathalia recently in person, after getting to know her through the gift of Facebook and it was confirmed how amazing this woman is. She is kind, strong, courageous and will soon be a mother again as she and John Paul are expecting. How joyous to watch the gift of family expanding in so many wonderful ways.

I feel blessed that I get to watch this love unfold and to see the joy in my nephew’s world. Here is his exact words about the joy of Lindsay in the snow:
“To be young again… She’s making me remember :-)”….. Ah and the circle of life continues….

And a family wouldn’t be complete without a pet right? Here is little Donny the Dog experiencing winter for the first time and the caption with this picture was “What is Winter?” How cute is that right?

I wish for all to see the gift of life itself in each and every day.

A Thanksgiving Prayer & A Sprinkle of Love from Above

Yesterday we celebrated our Canadian Thanksgiving with my side of the family. I am grateful for so many things in life but one that comes to mind as we celebrate Thanksgiving, is that although our parents are no longer with us, all of my siblings are. Sister Stephanie and Brother Wally did not make it yesterday but brother John surprised us with his presence as well as nephew Colton and wife Nicole here from the Vancouver area. It was really nice to have them come and made this Thanksgiving extra special.

Every holiday I sprinkle into my stuffing some of this poultry seasoning that I still have from my mother who passed in 1993!! I know you are probably thinking it’s no good anymore or it has lost its flavor but that is not the point. A little sprinkle of that stuff is like a big sprinkle of Love from our mother blessing our dinner. πŸ™‚ I have been doing it for years but only made the big reveal to the fam yesterday lolpoultry seasoning

Speaking of blessings, I am so blessed to be partnered with the most amazing human being, Don, who wrote this beautiful Thanksgiving prayer that I had the pleasure of reading just before our feast.

Here is his prayer that we shared:

Thanksgiving

We give thanks to the Universe for the abundances of riches that the
earth has bestowed upon us. May we be forever grateful for the Love of family and the fellowship that we enjoy as we partake of this feast that was prepared with Love and Laughter.

May this food nourish our bodies and our fellowship together, bless our souls.

Our meal was amazing and being with everyone even more amazing. Happy Thanksgiving to all of my Canadian family and friends.

Windows of the Soul

The passing on of wisdom.
The passing on of wisdom.

Sivanna and Great Auntie Esther. What a beautiful site to see. To me, this picture is a good representation of the cycle of life and family wisdom. As families we grow together, we share, we teach, and most of all we love. This picture was taken in a hotel on the eve of my niece’s wedding. Auntie Esther made the trip from Wisconsin to Thunder Bay. She is no longer with us, but her memory lives on. When we see two souls connecting through the windows of the soul, the eyes, it is a marvelous display of divine love and connection. You were a beautiful lady Auntie Esther!

Cutter Cookies

0

When I was little I was allergic to eggs, chocolate, tomatoes and oranges. My sister, Stephanie, used to make “special” cookies with me and we called them “Cutter Cookies”. The cookies had no eggs so I could have them! We had little tiny cookie cutters in the shape of animals. I can still see those little cookie cutters in my mind’s eye and the cookies of course! πŸ™‚ Both the time with my sister and the making of the cookies are such an important memory for me. With having the allergies and it not being in the day of many allergy free resources these cookies were extra special. In my Life Coaching practice I often ask clients about a favorite memory in time; one where they felt complete and at one with everything.  Many times their memory will be connected to nature, gatherings with family around food and in the preparing of food with loved ones. It is good to be reminded of these simple truths. At the end of our lives these moments can have had the greatest impact and yet they are the simplest to do. At the end of the day life is pretty simple… we eat, we gather and we love. Why not take time today to create one of these moments with someone you love? And Stephanie, thank you for being my sister and thank you for saving this picture and recipe. I am forever grateful for all of my amazing and wonderful siblings and their offspring. I enjoy so much the time I now spend preparing food, gathering and loving all of you!
